For those that don’t know, I recently transitioned myself to the curly girl method. In addition, I wanted something to manage my children’s bouncy curls as well. That’s why I’m head over heels excited to explain that JOHNSON’S® is new and improved, inside and out. That means it’s dye free, sulfate free, worry free, and great to use for the entire family. By using a combination of their products, I can create the perfect toddler curly hair routine to show off my baby’s gorgeous coils and waves.

Let’s talk ingredients

Since JOHNSON’S® has reformulated their products to be gentler for our little ones, let’s go over some key factors about the changes. JOHNSON’S® Head-To-Toe Baby Wash & Shampoo has a No More Tears formula makes this product tear-free and as gentle to your baby’s eyes as pure water. Thus, as I use it as part of a toddler curly hair routine, I can trust that it will rinse away clean and easy. Plus, this sulfate-free formula is gentle enough to cleanse my little one’s sensitive skin.

Here are a few highlights:

  • Pediatrician-tested.
  • Hypoallergenic.
  • No parabens, phthalates, sulfates or dyes.

If you need a recap of my curly hair transition you can view it here. I seriously believe in order to promote those soft bouncy curls, you need the help of the right ingredients.

The Step by Step Way to Complete a Toddler Curly Hair Routine

Nothing is as fun for our family as bathtime. My children love to soak in the tub, play with the water, and splash around for a little bit. Since I want to keep this tutorial as true to life as possible, I’m also including a few other JOHNSON’S® products that we use after hair washing as well. Needless to say, no matter how much your child likes to play during their bathtime, never leave them unattended.

1. Saturate your toddler’s hair

Before applying any cleanser, make sure your toddler’s hair is fully saturated with water. This step is pretty easy. Wet your child’s hair and let it sit for 2 minutes. Then, wet your hands and squish the ends of their hair. You’ll notice the strands begin to plump and become smooth.

The first step to a toddler curly hair routine is to saturate your child's hair with water. Then continue the process using JOHNSON’S® Head-To-Toe Baby Wash & Shampoo

2. Start cleansing

The next step in our toddler curly hair routine is to start cleaning the scalp. Add one pump of JOHNSON’S® Head-To-Toe Baby Wash & Shampoo to your hands and create a lather. Then, from your hands apply it to your child’s hair. Massage the roots of your toddler’s hair softly and in circular motions.

3. Rinse away

Next, after cleaning the scalp, rinse out the product from your child’s hair. Make sure to apply enough water to all sections of the hair until all of the bubbles are gone.

4. Detangle

Once rinsing is complete, use a wide tooth comb to detangle your toddler’s hair. Go gently over each curl and remove any knots.

We love using JOHNSON’S® products as part of our toddler curly hair routine. Each bottle has been reformulated to be gentler and the super convenient pumps help as well.

5. Complete the bathing process

Afterward, we finish up the bathing process by cleaning the rest of my little one’s body. The enhanced functionality of the pump-top bottle makes it easier for me use the product, even when my hands are full. Moreover, I enjoy the convenience provided when JOHNSON’S® decided to improve the packaging. It makes bathtime so much smoother so I can focus on the fun.

6. Add moisturizer

Once out of the bath, but while my child’s hair is still wet, I add 2 drops of rosehip oil in my hands and smooth it down my daughter’s hair. This keeps her coils super shiny and soft.

7. Scrunch softly

Lastly, after applying the moisturizer, it’s time to scrunch the ends of your child’s hair softly. You will see their curls begin to form, and scrunching helps set each strand’s shape. All you need is just a few mild squeezes. As a result, your child’s curls will be ready for the day.

8. Switch it up for nighttime

I usually do our toddler curly hair routine when we are getting ready in the morning. I do not want my babies to sleep with wet hair and performing the routine early in the day allows the curls to air dry. In regards to our nighttime routine, I’ll keep my child’s hair from getting wet but use JOHNSON’S® Bedtime Baby Bath with Soothing Aromas to clean her body. It gently cleanses and helps relax her before bed.

9. Don’t forget the extras

I say this in the most loving way possible, but my child is a complete mess when it comes to brushing her teeth. Even with supervision, she wants to control the process. Mixed with the fact that she’s still fine-tuning her fine motor skills, she always ends up with a little around her face. I use JOHNSON’S® Head-To-Toe Baby Cleansing Cloths. It’s the simple way to handle this funny situation.
