Want to Start A Blog?

Are you ready? Let’s talk about how to start a blog!

First, I’m going to warn that blogging is not for everyone. Sure, good reasons to start a blog can come from every individual; but the gumption to make it thrive, does not. I’m not going to tell you how to get over 20,000 page views in one month. I’m not going to lie and say I’ve made money within my first quarter. No, my view point on how to start a blog stems from real-world experience, and not a catchy Pinterest title. Although, you can totally accomplish great (and compensated) things, that explanation is for another time. Ok, so, now that we’ve cleared the air, lets talk about blog promotion.

Because you want your blog to go viral, too. Huh?

Well, for starters, having a strong blog does not happen overnight. And, consequently for some, never happens at all. Furthermore, Going Viral has it’s strategically placed dirty little secrets. Many people put so much effort into creating their blog that they completely forget how about promoting it.

If you truly want to gain followers, you are going to have to act like a cohesive brand, (not just a person with something to get off their chest). You will need to learn some salesmanship. The deeper you go into things, the more you will find that top notch bloggers swear by the 20/80 rule. Twenty percent of their time goes into creating content, and eighty percent goes into marketing it. Obviously, you’ll need top notch content that actually helps your audience. So, put your thinking cap on and, get to work.

How to start a blog in 6 easy steps.

1-Pick a host. Personally, I love GoDaddy and have a self-hosted site with managed WordPress. I like an easy set up and if there is ever a problem, I can call them 24/7. There is nothing more frustrating that not being able to get tech support. Never a problem with GoDaddy.

2-Pick a domain name. But don’t don’t register until the next few steps. The name should be short, descriptive, and intriguing to our targeted audience. Additionally, you should Google your prospective name to make sure it’s not being used in other places. Once you get some ideas in your head, make a list. Then, go to the next step.

3-Unify your social media. Remember when I said you need blog promotion? That happens with social media. I strongly recommend checking to see if your domain name on social media is available prior to registration. Before I even explained to people what it meant to mom to the fullest, I made sure I could secure the same user name on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, and Stumble Upon.

4-Register your domain name. Again, I stuck with GoDaddy.

5-Create some content. I recommend making about six interlocking blog posts before do your launch. Interlocking posts are posts that refer to each other. This keeps your audience reading more of your content and it also prevents theft. See an example of some of my posts that casually link each other here.

6-Launch it, promote it, and enjoy it. Be consistent in the content you put out and promote it precisely. Most of all, once you launch,  you should enjoy it. I currently use Hootsuite for blog promotion. It’s extremely easy to queue up #allTheThings. Got to be a super efficient momprenuer during nap time if you know what I’m saying!
